The singles Born In 69 and Young Livers and especially On A Rope enjoyed heavy rotation and thanks to a marketing gimmick (they released three versions of On A Rope with 3 new tracks on each for 99p a shot), the single made it to no.11 in the UK charts. That record was Scream, Dracula, Scream, which appeared in late 1995, to rave reviews, following the limited edition (and arguably even better) vinyl-only release, Hot Charity, which had surface earlier that year. It was hardly the kind of record Interscope would have been looking for. He promptly spent the next year or so focusing on Drive Like Jehu and, along with Rick Froberg, Mark Trombino and Mike Kennedy produced the monumentally powerful and ambitious Yank Crime, whose influence cannot be underestimated to this very day. Reis insisted that his more serious band, as he saw it, Drive Like Jehu, were signed up too. It was RFTCs Circa: Now that made the impact and, following the single Ditch Diggers MTV rotation, the band was snapped up by Interscope. The band was initially more of a side project for Reis, who founded the seminal post-hardcore band, Drive Like Jehu, at around the same time.īrothers Petey X and ND were friends of Reis (he later married their sister) and the bands primitive debut, Paint as a Fragrance, was released in 1991 with little press. Falling Down Stairs is a great opener, featuring a chaotic intro that bursts into a sonic blast of fuzz.
